What is Student Level?

Please complete the Student Application form and return ASAP

Student Level tuition is for students wishing to study their chosen martial art with the chance to work towards their black sash.

Although the OSA operates the modularised format of the syllabus, this does not mean that any martial art you have studied so far will not be counted. For example, if you are already a blue sash in Lau Gar Kung Fu and can provide evidence of the things you have learnt, our instructors can work out exactly how you can fit in with our modules. It may be the case that you only have to do one section of Module 1 and 2, but then skip straight to module 5

As explained on the main tuition page, the modules have been created by dividing up the syllabus into similar sections, so that certain techniques are taught all at once, e.g., knife and staff defence in Lau Gar Kung Fu. In order to embrace the wide variety of people's interests, the Lau Gar syllabus is offered in a number of formats:

The table below is repeated from the main tuition page and shows the number of modules in each variation of the syllabus. Contact us to discuss the details of each syllabus further.

Programme Number of Modules
Lau Gar Kung Fu 8
Lau Gar Kickboxing 6
Lau Gar (Low) Kickboxing 6
Lau Gar Freestyle 6

After the final module in each syllabus, you will then be eligible to take your black sash, although at least six months training is recommended before taking this as the black sash is effectively a conglomeration of all the previous modules in any order. In addition there will be five 2-minute sparring rounds to finish it off. There is a separate price for taking a Black Sash Assessment.

Is there a group of you who wish to learn LAU GAR but cannot afford both the time or money to travel to York?

We can help. Arrangements can be made to train one of you as a Mentor Instructor who will then guide the others on a weekly basis.
