Module Title: PRINCIPLES OF MARTIAL ARTS PRACTICE

MODULE DESCRIPTION This module will introduce the student to the skills and techniques in martial arts with specific reference to methods that are used across a range of different disciplines. It will have both a theoretical and practical approach, which will enable the students to develop their understanding of the theory of the application of different martial arts methods and put this knowledge into practice by applying the appropriate skills in a practical context. The module will serve as a foundation for students going on to undertake the martial arts coaching module at level 5.
LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successfully completing this module the student will have the knowledge, understanding and skills to: 1 Examine the responsibilities and skills required in teaching martial arts principles in practice. 2 Investigate the factors that are required to improve practical performance. 3 Examine the application of coaching techniques and processes with specific reference to martial arts
INDICATIVE CONTENT/AREAS OF STUDY The student will be introduced to the role of the martial arts coach by identifying the responsibilities of coaching and by learning to use effective planning, delivery and evaluation of sessions in a safe environment; the use of different coaching styles. The performance factors will be studied in relation to teaching and improvement of skills that cross over the boundaries of different martial disciplines. Coaching Children, Child Protection guidelines & Code of Conduct and the safe martial arts environment. Assessing the theoretical underpinning of different martial disciplines in terms of basic techniques such as punching, kicking, throws and groundwork.
TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGY A combination of lecturing, seminars, practical delivery and directed study offers the opportunity to use knowledge and skills gained to evaluate and analyse many issues and to draw conclusions based on directed reading and research. ASSESSMENT Assessment Weighting: 100% Coursework
CW 1: 50% Learning outcomes 1 and 2
Working individually, the student will produce a 1500 word essay, which analyses a specific technique to be taught in a martial arts session. This will include a session plan to develop that technique. CW 2: 50% Learning outcome 3A poster presentation detailing the session plan and evaluation for one martial arts session
Module Title ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY FOR THE MARTIAL ARTIST Credit Value: 15 Level: 4 Mandatory Pre-requisites: None Pre-requisites: None Co-requisites: None MODULE DESCRIPTIONKnowledge of the muscular and skeletal systems is fundamental for the understanding of human movement associated with the martial arts. Students will gain a sound foundation of understanding of these in the context of human movement and function and their application in a martial arts context. LEARNING OUTCOMESOn completion of this module students will be able to: 1. Relate the structure and function of the skeleton, joints and muscles to the support and movement of the body. 2. Understand the basics of biomechanics and kinesiology of human movement
INDICATIVE CONTENT / AREAS OF STUDY· Classification of major bones of the body, their basic structure and role in supporting and moving the body · Structure of synovial joints and their function in moving the body · Classification of major muscles of the body and their structure · The role muscles play in maintaining posture and movement of the body · Classification of movement in relation to the body planes and axes · Principles of biomechanics and kinesiology TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGYThe combination of lectures and laboratory practical offers the students the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop skills to evaluate and analyse issues and to draw conclusions based in independent thought and research. This module will involve the requirement to do a weekend working in a laboratory situation using manikins to develop knowledge.

Context
This module will enable the student to develop a knowledge and understanding of the skills and techniques of sports coaching in a Martial Arts context. It will have both a theoretical and practical approach which will enable the student to learn about the theory of the coaching process and put it into practice by applying the skills in a martial arts setting. Enhancing the coaching process and developing martial arts both as a sport and business opportunity is a key factor in today’s martial arts and this will be analysed in a two fold manner. Firstly as a process of encouraging athlete potential. Secondly in the context of providing business opportunity especially with the current growth in academy development.
The module will serve as a foundation for students who wish to undertake National Governing Body Coaching Awards or Sports Coach UK modules.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successfully completing this module the student will have the knowledge, understanding and skills to:-
1 Identify responsibilities and skills required in the coaching process.
2 Appreciate what factors are required to improve sports performers.
3 Apply the techniques learnt to coach participants.
4 Show an understanding of and apply developmental skills in a realistic environment
Indicative Content
The student will be introduced to the role of the coach by identifying the responsibilities of coaching and by learning to use effective planning, delivery and evaluation of sessions in a safe environment; the use of different coaching styles, the performance factors will be studied in relation to teaching and improvement of skills, improving fitness and improving the mental state of the player; coaching skills acquired will enable the student develop progressive practices and coach specific martial arts skills and in relevant places competition skills. Session planning, Goal setting, periodisation and analysis of coaching. Child Protection guidelines and legislation. Sports development models and processes. Development of business plans associated with academy or school development.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
The combination of lecturing, workshops, practical sessions and directed learning offers the students the opportunity to use knowledge and skills gained to evaluate and analyse many issues and to draw conclusions based in independent thought and research. Students will have the opportunity to study materials delivered through other means such as electronic learning and learning environments created online.
Total 150 hours of taught and directed learning through a series of short courses and a variety of online materials.
Assessment
Assessment Weighting: 100% CourseworkCW 1: % 40% Learning outcomes 1 and 2
Working individually, the student will produce a 2,000 word portfolio which analyses the efficacy of different coaching styles, illustrated by examples from current coaching practice and the performance of their students. This may also comprise of video/dvd/electronic evidence.
CW 2: %: 40% Learning outcome 3Working in groups, students will plan, execute and evaluate an activity session for a specified group of martial artists. This may also comprise of video/dvd/electronic evidence.
CW 3% 20% Learning Outcome 4
This will include the development of an outline business plan or an athlete development plan for a specific martial art.
